Audi’s cheapest electric vehicle is a reborn cult classic from the 2000s, the A2 e-tron. The model has been spied with less disguise than ever before, revealing a modernized, Sportback version of the classic A2. The hatchback is set to debut this fall and will borrow heavily from the VW ID.3 Neo.
The Design
The A2 e-tron resembles the original A2, which was produced from 1999 to 2005, but with a unique design that borrows cues from crossovers. The front end is heavily disguised, but a rounded front bumper and a rectangular lower intake are visible. Previous spy photos have also revealed split lighting units and a fully enclosed grille.
The profile of the A2 e-tron recalls the classic A2, but with a Sportback vibe, resulting in a dynamic greenhouse and a gently sloping roof that terminates at a pronounced spoiler. The model also features gloss black cladding and aerodynamically optimized wheels, joined by pronounced wheel arches and winglet-style door pulls.

Interior and Performance
While spy photographers didn’t get close enough for interior pictures, previous images have shown a familiar cabin that resembles the Q3. This means we can expect an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster as well as a 12.8-inch infotainment system. The cabin will also feature a flat-bottom steering wheel with a fixed bar that houses the shifter and some vehicle controls.
Audi has been coy on performance specifications, but they’ll presumably echo the ID.3 Neo. The Volkswagen offers motors with 168 hp, 188 hp, and 228 hp, and the A2 e-tron will likely stick to the higher-end powertrains. The model may also eschew quattro all-wheel drive.
The A2 e-tron is based on the MEB+ platform and will likely feature 50, 58, and 79 kWh battery packs, allowing for a WLTP range of up to 391 miles (630 km). As Audi’s most affordable electric vehicle, the A2 e-tron is expected to be a significant addition to the company’s lineup.
