BC Hydro announced a C$700 million plan to expand its public electric‑vehicle charging ports to 3,500 by 2035, more than triple its current footprint.
Scale of the rollout and new hardware standards
Today the utility operates 917 ports at 190 sites across British Columbia. The upcoming phase will add larger hubs in communities, along major highway corridors, and in high‑demand urban districts. New sites will follow a standardized design meant to boost reliability and simplify maintenance.
All installations will use 200 kW DC chargers as the baseline, while selected high‑traffic locations receive 400 kW ultra‑fast units. The upgrade also introduces plug‑and‑charge and tap‑to‑pay capabilities, aligning with the energy‑based pricing model approved by regulators.
Signature locations will feature additional amenities such as washrooms; showcase sites may include canopies and digital signage. Larger hubs will cut waiting times during peak demand periods.
Funding, government support and expected impact
The provincial government is contributing C$18 million through the CleanBC Go Electric Public Charger Program. Funds target fast chargers at businesses, municipalities, Indigenous communities, and non‑profit organisations, especially in rural, northern, and high‑demand zones.
Adrian Dix, the province’s Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions, said overseas conflicts increase fuel‑price pressure at home, prompting more residents to switch to electric vehicles. He noted that a reliable charging network is essential for families seeking lower pollution and fuel costs.
