Geely Auto has officially launched operations in Canada, marking a new phase in its global expansion. The automaker announced this development on October 8. The China-based company is setting up local operations and building a retail and service network ahead of introducing its first model in the Canadian market next year. “Canada represents an important next step in Geely Auto’s international growth,” said Bryan Wu, managing director of Geely Auto Canada. “We are entering this market with a long-term commitment, bringing our global technology and engineering capabilities to Canadian drivers while building strong local partnerships and the support customers need to feel confident in choosing Geely.”
Expansion Across Europe
The Canadian launch follows Geely Auto’s entry into seven new European markets earlier this year, including Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and France. The automaker sold over 3 million vehicles globally in more than 100 countries in 2025, with nearly 1.7 million being new energy vehicles, which encompass hybrid and fully electric models. Geely Auto Canada will leverage its parent company’s global technology, engineering expertise, and a customer experience tailored to Canadian drivers, according to the press release. Central to this effort is developing a network of trusted local partners who understand regional communities and can support customers throughout their ownership journey.
Trade Agreement Reduces Tariffs
The expansion into Canada is supported by a trade agreement between China and Canada reached in January. Half of the imported vehicles must be priced at CA$35,000 or less.
Contrasting U.S. Policies
The favorable Canadian trade terms contrast sharply with U.S. policies. This was on top of a 2.5% duty, citing concerns over unfair trade practices. The policy has limited market access for Chinese brands like Geely in North America’s largest auto market. Geely’s situation differs from its majority stake in Sweden-based EV maker Polestar, which was banned from the U.S. market in June due to restrictions on connected vehicle technology linked to China or Russia under the Department of Commerce’s rules.
Strategic Partnerships and Future Plans
In July, Geely announced a joint venture with Ford Motor Co. to produce vehicles at Ford’s Valencia, Spain plant. This partnership supports Ford’s plan to introduce five new passenger vehicles by 2029. It also accelerates Geely’s European presence. Vehicles built in Spain, including two electric SUVs slated for 2028, will expand Geely’s product range in the region. Geely Auto Canada indicated it will share further details about its initial Canadian models, retail locations, availability, and pricing as it approaches its 2026 commercial launch.
