The Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 4Matic Electric is the latest iteration of the automaker’s top-selling SUV, now fully electrified. Its arrival marks a shift for the GLC lineup, offering buyers an electric alternative that delivers both performance and efficiency. The model’s powertrain has earned recognition, including a spot on the Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems for 2026, a rare honor for a new electric SUV.
Performance that matches its heritage
The GLC 400 4Matic Electric combines 483 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque—figures that make it quick on the highway and in city traffic. Its 800-volt architecture enables rapid charging, with a 10% to 80% charge in about 20 minutes, a capability that addresses one of the biggest concerns for electric SUV buyers. Jurors for the Wards award noted its ability to accelerate smoothly while maintaining confidence at speed.
The powertrain features two permanently excited synchronous motors, one at each axle, designed by Mercedes-Benz. These motors achieve 93% battery-to-wheel efficiency, thanks to silicon carbide inverters and a double-V magnet configuration. The rear motor uses a two-speed automatic transmission, a rare feature in electric vehicles, optimizing efficiency for both city and highway driving. The front motor, meanwhile, adjusts instantly to demand, disconnecting and reconnecting as needed.
Efficiency and range for daily use
The SUV’s 94 kWh lithium-ion battery pack delivers an estimated 350 miles of range, meeting the needs of most drivers without frequent stops. Mercedes-Benz highlights its 680 Wh/liter energy density, achieved through silicon oxide anodes mixed with graphite. This design supports both long drives and quick top-ups.
Regenerative braking plays a key role in efficiency. The GLC can recapture up to 300 kW of power when slowing down, reducing reliance on mechanical brakes in 99% of everyday driving. Drivers can adjust regenerative braking through four settings, D- (maximum), D (standard), D+ (coasting), and D auto (intelligent), allowing for precise control over energy recovery. The system also integrates a heat pump that draws heat from the drive unit, battery, and ambient air, improving climate control without draining power.
Charging flexibility is another strength. The GLC accepts up to 330 kW of DC fast-charging power, cutting a 10% to 80% charge to about 22 minutes. At home, a fully depleted battery recharges in roughly 10 hours using Level 2 charging.
A quieter, cleaner SUV
The GLC 400 4Matic Electric isn’t just fast; it’s designed to be quiet and efficient in operation. The two-speed rear motor and optimized motor design reduce noise while maximizing power delivery. Jurors praised its smooth, effortless drive, describing it as both exhilarating and tranquil. The SUV accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and can reach 130 mph with enough space.
Mercedes-Benz has also focused on reducing the vehicle’s carbon footprint beyond its emissions. The Bremen Plant, where the GLC is assembled, operates with 100% green electricity, making production net carbon neutral. This commitment extends to the vehicle’s lifecycle, ensuring lower environmental impact from manufacturing to daily use.
