The first orders for Volkswagen’s electric ID. Polo open in the UK this week, signaling the introduction of a fully electric version of the brand’s long-running Polo hatchback.
Customers may place orders starting Thursday, though initial availability is limited to two launch editions. Regular production models will follow in September.
Two launch editions begin sales
The ID. Polo launches with two special editions: the Life Launch Edition and the Style Launch Edition. Both include a 52kWh battery pack, while a smaller 37kWh version of the Life trim will also be available from stock.
The 37kWh Life model starts at £25,555. It qualifies for the UK government’s Electric Car Grant, reducing the price by £1,500. The larger battery increases range to 281 miles and boosts power to 211hp, shortening the 0-62mph time to 7.1 seconds.
Standard features on the Life Launch Edition include two-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Style Launch Edition, priced from £32,995, adds a panoramic glass roof, massaging front seats, a surround-view camera, and rear privacy glass.
Lower-priced models follow in September
When the full ID. Polo range arrives in September, prices will decrease, though some premium features from the launch editions will no longer be included. The base Life trim, starting at £23,495, will come with parking sensors, a rear-view camera, a 12.9-inch infotainment screen, wireless phone charging, and a height-adjustable boot floor.
The Style trim, priced from £28,470, will feature 18-inch alloy wheels, IQ. Light LED matrix headlights, illuminated VW badges, ambient interior lighting, and comfort sports seats. Additional details include “play” and “pause” graphics on the accelerator and brake pedals.
Volkswagen has not announced when the first customer deliveries will take place. Such delays are common for new electric models, as production often requires months to scale up.
Most electric superminis face challenges in balancing cost and range. Volkswagen’s strategy of offering two battery sizes provides buyers with a choice between lower upfront expenses and greater driving distance. This flexibility remains uncommon in the segment, where most rivals offer only one battery option.
Volkswagen UK has not indicated whether the ID. Polo will eventually become cheaper than its petrol-powered counterpart. Currently, the electric version carries a higher price, though incentives and reduced running costs may reduce the difference over time.
For motor enthusiasts looking to explore more car events this year, the ID. Polo’s launch adds another option to the growing electric vehicle market.
