The Volvo EX90 Ultra Performance is a large SUV that combines Swedish design with state-of-the-art technology. Despite being built in China under the Geely Group, it retains Volvo’s classic character. This model is part of Volvo’s push into electric technology, labeled a “software-defined” car.
A Flagship SUV with Swedish Roots
At 5027mm long, the EX90 is 84mm longer than the combustion-based XC90. Its design is a minimalist reboot of the XC90, featuring big surfaces and subtle shapes. The front is EV-flat but distinctly Volvo, with a large Iron Mark logo and Thor’s Hammer running lights. The welcome lighting sequence includes a “blink” as the Hammer splits to reveal the main headlights.
The Sand Dune finish, a $1500 option, is the hero color for this model. Standard 22-inch wheels are available, though downsizing to 21-inch costs extra. The gloss black diamond design shown here adds another $6,000.
A Cabin of Sophisticated Simplicity
The EX90’s cabin is a masterpiece of Scandinavian design, with soothing tones and minimalist ergonomics. Volvo has been sucked into the Teslasphere completely, with pretty much everything controlled through the touchscreen. The Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system is a standout feature, enhanced by an Abbey Road Studios Mode added via an over-the-air update.
The EX90 is fully Google-integrated, allowing users to sign into their personal accounts and access features like wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. However, some controls, like steering and mirror adjustments, remain in the touchscreen, which can be irritating. The electrochromic glass roof, which can switch between clear and frosted, is another feature that requires screen interaction.
The EX90 offers 6 or 7 seats with no cost difference. The flat floor of the EV platform helps with legroom and overall comfort, although we’re not quite talking people-mover levels of space back there. Many owners may simply use the EX90 as a supersized 5-seater. There are controls to power-fold the 3rd row either from the rear door apertures or at the back of the car. In that configuration you have a massive 690-litre boot. In the cargo area there’s also a control to lower the air suspension, to make loading easier.
The EX90’s performance is equally impressive. With 500kW/870Nm, it accelerates to 100km/h in 4.2 seconds. The dual-motor AWD and progressive braking make it a luxury express, capable of handling various driving conditions with ease.
The 106kW battery offers a 600km range, though this can vary with usage. The 800-volt architecture enables 350kW charging under ideal conditions.

Its 500kW/870Nm power output enables it to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.2 seconds, making it one of the fastest SUVs in its class. The chassis uses grunt for good, working with the powertrain and dual-motor AWD to soak up challenging roads. The ride is deeply impressive for such a weighty machine on 22-inch wheels. There’s some fussiness at low speed on rippled urban roads, which is endemic to air suspension; but it’s a happy tradeoff for such control and versatility in so many different driving situations.
Safety and Ownership
Safety is a hallmark of Volvo, and the EX90 Ultra Performance is no exception. It boasts a 5-star ANCAP rating, valid until December 2031. The vehicle is equipped with a full suite of safety features, including dual front and side airbags, knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, and side curtain airbags that cover all three rows. Additionally, it features rear cross-traffic alert and braking to enhance safety in reverse maneuvers.
Ownership of the EX90 comes with a 5-year/150,000km warranty, and the traction battery is covered for 8 years/160,000km. Servicing is required every 2 years/30,000km, ensuring that the vehicle remains in top condition.
