Volvo New Zealand will introduce updated versions of its XC60 and XC90 SUVs next year, featuring plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) models with 2.5 times more electric range than current versions. The changes mark a major step in the brand’s push toward full electrification, offering customers a longer zero-emission driving option before transitioning to fully electric models. The rollout targets both urban commuters and families seeking flexible power-train options.
The new XC60 PHEV will extend electric range from 67 km to 180 km, while the XC90 PHEV jumps from 62 km to 165 km. Both models retain their mild-hybrid options, preserving the efficiency benefits that existing buyers appreciate.
The automaker has not disclosed battery or motor specifications, but the upgrades include larger battery packs and more powerful electric systems. Pricing and full local specifications will be confirmed before the end of the year, allowing dealerships to prepare marketing material in advance.
Beyond the range boost, the XC60 receives a full redesign, featuring a restyled front grille, bumper, hood, and wheel arches. The signature Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights have been refined, and rear styling now emphasizes horizontal lines. Inside, the dashboard and door panels are updated with new materials such as Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather and wood trim, giving the cabin a more upscale feel.
The XC90 retains its premium positioning without a full exterior refresh, but it benefits from the same larger battery and stronger electric motor as its sibling. It continues to offer a spacious interior and advanced safety features that have defined the model line since its launch.
Volvo’s electrification strategy now includes three mid-size SUV options: the PHEV XC60 and XC90, alongside the all-electric EX60. The company frames the move as a gradual shift, ensuring customers have choices at every stage of electrification. The XC60 PHEV arrives in New Zealand in early 2027, while the timeline for the XC90 PHEV remains unconfirmed.
According to local reports, the XC60 is the brand’s best-selling model ever, and the XC90 helped launch its premium SUV segment. The new PHEVs now carry those legacies forward, adding the benefit of longer electric driving capability. The XC60 also introduces Google Gemini as its AI assistant, enabling more natural voice interactions for infotainment and safety controls.
