First Ferrari Luce EV sells for £30 million at auction

First Ferrari Luce EV sells for £30 million at auction

The first Ferrari Luce electric crossover has sold for a record £30 million at auction, becoming the most expensive new car ever sold through an auction house.

Auction records and charity donations

The sale occurred at the RM Sotheby’s Monterey Auction 2026, where ‘Chassis 0’ crossed the block. Following a period of intense bidding, the first production example of Ferrari’s divisive EV achieved a staggering $40 million.

All proceeds from the sale were donated to charity, specifically The Ferrari Foundation, which supports future educational initiatives. The new owner will take possession of the vehicle in the first quarter of 2027, after it returns to Ferrari’s Maranello factory.

Ferrari has donated all the proceeds from Chassis 0 to The Ferrari Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping support future educational initiatives. The funds raised will ensure that the legacy of the marque extends beyond automotive engineering into academic development.

Exclusive design details

The Luce offered for sale was not simply the first example off the production line. It also boasted a unique specification designed by the marque’s ‘Tailor Made’ department.

For the exterior, an exclusive Madreperla Semi-Gloss paint finish was developed especially for Luce Chassis 0. A dedicated Ferrari pigment was said to have been used, capable of producing ‘iridescent reflections that evolve from green to violet depending on the intensity and angle of the light.’

White continues as the theme for the wheels and brake calipers, with the Ferrari logo set against an ‘optical white background.’ The latter is another exclusive for Luce Chassis 0. This unique visual treatment ensures that the vehicle stands out even when stationary, with the paint shifting colors dynamically under different lighting conditions.

On the inside there is more white trim. Le Mans metallic leather in Perla, an exclusive material developed for Ferrari Tailor Made, features throughout the cabin. Much of the dashboard and secondary trim are finished Grigio Corvara grey, instead of the traditional black.

The interior design balances the white leather with darker grey accents, utilizing the Grigio Corvara finish for the dashboard and secondary trim. This choice replaces the standard black materials found in other models, offering a sophisticated and lighter cabin environment that complements the exterior’s unique paintwork.

Price history and competition

More expensive than a McLaren F1

Listed with a pre-sale guide price of $1.1 million (£740,000), the staggering amount paid for the Luce makes it the fifth most expensive car ever sold at an auction. This valuation far exceeded initial expectations, reflecting the high demand for exclusive, one-off configurations.

It even surpassed the $34.66 million (£25.59 million) paid for a McLaren F1 GTR, formerly owned by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, during the same RM Sotheby’s event. The auction event featured several high-value vehicles, but the Luce emerged as the undisputed star, proving that the electric crossover segment can command prices traditionally reserved for heritage supercars.
