GMC is considering reviving the Jimmy nameplate with a retro-inspired design aimed at competing with the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. The move follows years of speculation about a proper off-road rival for those vehicles, and early signals suggest the new truck will draw heavily from the 1973–1991 “Square Body” Jimmy, also known as the K2 Blazer. This design choice mirrors Ford’s successful strategy with the Bronco, which blended rugged capabilities with vintage styling.

The company reportedly began development on the new Jimmy alongside the third-generation Canyon, which launched in 2023. However, the project was paused as the company shifted focus to electric vehicles. That pivot proved costly, with GM reporting billions in losses tied to its EV bets. Now, the program appears to be back on track, according to unnamed sources speaking to the report.

It could be built in the U.S., sharing its platform with the GMC Canyon. This would avoid criticism that plagued Chevrolet when it reintroduced the Blazer nameplate for a unibody crossover. Unlike the current Blazer, it is expected to adopt a more rugged, truck-like identity. Ford’s Bronco has already shown that retro styling can appeal to buyers seeking both heritage and modern capability.

One potential departure from competitors is the possibility of a V8 engine. The Ford Bronco and Toyota 4Runner currently lack eight-cylinder options, and the Canyon—a closely related model—also doesn’t offer one. However, the source of this engine remains unclear.

GMC’s decision to revive the Jimmy reflects a broader industry trend of using nostalgia to stand out in crowded segments. While the Bronco’s success has proven the appeal of retro designs, the Jimmy will need to balance heritage with modern expectations, including technology, efficiency, and safety. Analysts note that the V8’s inclusion could be a gamble, given the rising popularity of hybrids and electric trucks. Still, GMC’s history with the Jimmy suggests it sees value in the nameplate’s legacy.
