The classic Land Rover Defender has long stood for rugged utility, but a Texas-built restomod is redefining what a refurbished off-roader can cost and achieve. Heldeburg’s Lange, a carefully re-engineered 1990s Defender, is now listed for $348,720, more than double the starting price of a new Defender OCTA, which begins at $158,800 in the U.S.
The diesel engine that defies convention
Most restomods replace the original powertrain with a modern V8 or electric conversion, but Heldeburg chose a different path. The company kept the Defender’s original 300Tdi turbo-diesel engine and modified it to deliver 42% more power while preserving the mechanical character that defines the model. The choice to retain the diesel went beyond nostalgia—it ensured the vehicle’s off-road credibility, where torque and durability often outweigh raw horsepower.

Additional upgrades include a performance brake system, power-assisted steering, and a locking 4Ă—4 differential. Heldeburg also revised the suspension with upgraded shocks, sway bars, and stabilizers. The outcome is a vehicle that performs better on pavement without losing its off-road edge. That balance makes the price easier to accept for buyers who want a Defender capable of everything.
A Texas rancher’s loss is the market’s gain
The Lange wasn’t built as a collector’s item. A Texas rancher commissioned it as a workhorse for his property. After a few years of use, he switched to a larger Defender 130 from the same builder, leaving the Lange available. The truck now features a matte-black roll cage integrated into the frame, a steel bumper with red tow hooks, and a fresh Oak Green Metallic paint job.
The interior received an equally thorough update. The original Defender’s spartan utilitarianism is gone. In its place sits a modern infotainment system, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and quilted leather upholstery in black and brown. A third-row bench allows seating for up to eight, a significant departure from the stripped-down work trucks of the past.

Paying Ferrari-level prices for a diesel-powered Defender may strike some as excessive. Yet the Lange isn’t merely a restored classic. Heldeburg created a reimagined version that blends the soul of an old Defender with the refinement of a modern luxury SUV. The right buyer will see value in that combination.
The rancher who ordered it didn’t focus on resale value. He wanted a machine that could handle ranch work while drawing attention. Now, someone else must decide if those qualities still matter.
